    Hello
I am researching the war record of an old teacher of mine who evidently served in North Africa and Italy, having been evacuated from Cherbourg in June 1940. His name was Captain/Major Eric Campbell Colville. He came from the Isle of Man. He served with the King’s Regiment (Liverpool) and was apparently at Monte Cassino and Salerno so it’s possible (likely?) that he was in the 2nd Battalion of that regiment. He lost his batman there. I have made contact with his son who confirmed that his father was born in 1920 and had the service number 609 1796 however he doesn’t know much more about his war record aside from the above. Any idea where I could get a copy of JJ Burke-Gaffney’s “The Story of the KIng’s Regiment (Liverpool) 1914-1948 as I feel he may be mentioned in there? I’m new to this so thank you for any assistance.

Does the Association hold a list of everyone who was awarded the Italy Star?
My late father,Eric W G Tagg, has one, but I cannot find any
record of where he was stationed in 1944.
    Can you help me?
    Many thanks,
    David Tagg

In case you didn’t realize, the word “parte” on your site is spelled incorrectly. I had similar issues on my website which hurt my credibility until someone pointed it out and I discovered some of the services like SpellHelper.com or SpellingCheck.com which help with these type of issues.

  6. Richard Mathews

Hi, This is my first post. My late father, Gwyn Bevan Mathews – army number 7909202. His service record shows HQ Squadron British 6th Armoured Division from 1941 -46. He fought in Tunisia, Italy and ended the war in Austria. I have been unable to identify the unit he served in and would appreciate any help to resolve this. Many thanks.

  9. Judith Chalmers Paterson

My father (Robert Chalmers MM) was with the Hampshires when he was wounded at Montescudo on 15.9.44.
He lost an eye and was transferred to the RAOC. On discharge he was with 557 BOD MTS company. He said he was stationed at or near Naples and was billeted in a monastery on VE Day. I have a photo of him in the cab of a little shunting engine, was he driving it? I don’t know.
Can any one enlighten us where this may have been? My brother is in the Naples area next month and we would love to know more.

  10. Alan Poole

My father, Staff Sergeant, REW Poole, 7521153. His records show he served with the 8th Army, 66th BGH in North Africa, Sicily and Italy.
Very little detail is provided in his service record.
Having failed to ask the right questions during his life I am now trying to fill in the many gaps.
He did say he was at the invasion of Sicily and got his feet wet when his landing craft landed on a sand bar and he lost all his equipment.
Can anyone assist with filling in some details?
I’m not sure if he was with the 66th BGH all the time or he was attached to a Field Ambulance Unit or other Unit. There is a large gap in the records with the last comment ‘posted to unknown’ coinciding with the invasion of Sicily.
