Looking for info on my granddad

My grandfather died two weeks ago at the grand old age of 96, and I’ve always been fascinated by his war stories. He was quite closed off but I want to do him justice in his eulogy and he gave me his Italy Star several years ago as a memento and spoke many times about his participation in the Italy Star association. I know he served as an armoured vehicle captain and saw action In both Africa and Italy, his name was Donald J Mcinnes and I was hoping to find out some info about his service so I can truly represent his time and sacrifice for our country. I am afraid that you have rather left it late. You need to go to http://www.gov.uk and search for ‘How do I obtain a Service Record’. That will give you his full military history from start to finish.

The tricky bit is that the service can take up to three months!
