The liberation of Rome was an entirely American affair – the British Eighth Army was still too far south to have any impact on securing the city.

He may have been told on 3 Jun 44 that he was a battle casualty replacement for a unit that had suffered heavily at the Fourth and final Battle of Monte Cassino that had started on 11 May 44.
