I am hoping that a veteran or or veteran’s family can help to locate some information that relates to a story my late father told my brother and I about his time in Sicily in 1943. He was in the Navy and was on a tank landing craft that was part of the invasion.

After the successful invasion operation, he said that he travelled the island a little and signed a visitors book in a locally well known establishment – we think this was possibly in northern or north eastern Siciliy, and maybe near Toarmina. Not long before he died in 1990 he visited Sicily, inc. Toarmina, with my mum. They located the establishment he told us about and found his name in the visitor’s book which covered June/July 1943.

I am visiting Sicily from 12th Sept for 2weeks and I’m desperately keen to find the place he visited and therefore his entry in the book.

If any of you veterans / families know about the ‘place’ I have described or know where I might be able to get information that might help, that would be great. I cannot be sure but I think it may be located in or near Toarmina, Messina or maybe even Palermo. It could be a church or monastery or similar but we aren’t sure.

    Regards
    Chris

My father Monty Thomas served in D company 9th Battalion Royal Fusilers (City of London ) aged 18 ( He actualy enlisted in the Royal Welch he was from Aberystwyth) He was captured and wounded on the 22/23 Jan 1943 He was a POW till 1945 His time in Italy was short but he remembered officers and a friend who were killed. Major Skillern , Lieutenant Bannerman and Fusiler Glanmore Williams . Does anybody have any details they can share of the 9th battalion’s time at Garigliano and of other Royal Welch Fusilers who fought in the Royal Fusilers (City of London )?

    1. John Nicolle

      Richard,
My father was in the 8th battalion RF. I have the Regimental war history “Always a Fusilier” by C. Nortcote Parkinson. It describes the crossing of the Garigliano and mentions the death of Major Skillern. I’m happy to send you copies of the relevant pages.
      Regards John
